Abstract: Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is an unusual member of the FGF family that can circulate in the blood as a hormone. FGF21 exerts both its physiologic and pharmacologic effects by binding to a cell surface receptor composed of the classic FGF receptor, FGF21 acts directly on the nervous system to mediate most of its physiologic and pharmacologic actions, including its effects on hydration, body weight and insulin sensitivity. We are currently studying FGF21’s mechanism of action in the nervous system and the relationship between its physiology and pharmacology.
